The first episode of Murdertown Series 1 on Crime+Investigation focuses on two Hull murders. One of those, the murder of 9 year-old Christopher Laverack, has been one of the motivations for my getting involved in Crime Guy. These childhood experiences cause lasting ripples. Something in the news, some tiny memory, causes me to remember Christopher several times a year. What on earth happened to him? It was decades before the public would find out.

The hunt for Christopher Laverack, 1984

It is not easy to watch Crime+Investigation in the UK. Unless you’re lucky enough to have Sky, Virgin or TalkTalk, you have to do some hunting around. You can get it as an add-on to Amazon Prime Video and on Apple TV. I eventually found a free link here that works in the UK.

One aspect of TV documentaries I have criticised in recent months is their focus on entertainment. There are ways of telling a story, and the TV shows turn tragedy into gripping thrillers. In the next few weeks on Crime Guy, I will dig behind the headlines. The story of Christopher Laverack is primarily a family tragedy, not entertaining at all.

You can watch a preview of the Hull episode for free on YouTube if you are in the UK.
